“Chernobyl Has Never Existed: The Invisible Side of the ‘Peaceful Atom’”

On April 26, 2017 at 19.00 Center of Independent Social Research (Ligovsky prospekt 87, office 301) will host a lecture by Andrei Stepanov “Chernobyl Has Never Existed: The Invisible Side of the ‘Peaceful Atom’”.

More than 30 years have passed since the Chernobyl accident, which turned into a catastrophe. A lot of computer games and fantastic novels are called after Chernobyl now. Has Chernobyl ever existed in fact, or it was the result of political strategies and practices that skillfully impose different visions of the Chernobyl catastrophe? Did Chernobyl generate an “anthropological shock” described by Ulrich Beck right after the 1986 catastrophe, designed to change perceptions of risk, politics, and technology?
